The alternator's job is simple to describe and easy to overlook: keep the battery charged and the electrical system powered while the engine runs. When it starts to fail, the symptoms can look a lot like a bad battery, but the actual test is straightforward.
The Real Test: Voltage Under Load
With the engine running, a healthy charging system should hold the battery somewhere around 13.5 to 14.5 volts. This is different from a battery's resting voltage when the engine is off, which is normally closer to 12.6 volts for a fully charged battery. If a voltage test with the engine running shows a number well below 13.5, the alternator likely isn't charging the way it should. A number well above 14.5 can point to an overcharging problem instead, which is a different issue but still worth addressing, since it can damage the battery over time.
Signs That Point Specifically to the Alternator
The Car Dies Again After a Jump Start
This is one of the clearest signs. If jump-starting the car gets it running, but it dies again once you turn it off, or shortly after, the battery likely wasn't the real problem. The alternator isn't recharging it while you drive, so the battery just runs back down.
A Battery Warning Light While Driving
A battery warning light that comes on at startup and then goes off is normal. One that comes on or stays on while you're actually driving is a different story, and it usually means the charging system isn't keeping up.
Flickering Lights or Slow Accessories
Headlights that flicker or dim while driving, or power windows and other accessories that seem to run slower than usual, both point to inconsistent electrical output, which is a classic alternator symptom.
A Whining or Grinding Noise
The alternator is a spinning component driven by a belt, and a failing internal bearing can produce a whining or grinding noise that changes with engine speed.
Why This Gets Confused With a Battery Problem
Both a dying battery and a failing alternator can leave you with a car that won't start. The difference is what happens next: a weak battery that gets jump-started and then driven for a while often recovers fine, since the (working) alternator recharges it. A failing alternator means the car keeps having the same problem no matter how many times you jump it, because nothing is actually recharging the battery in between.
