What Actually Distinguishes a Repair From a Replacement
Small, Isolated Leaks: Often Repairable
A single pinhole leak, a minor seam leak, or small isolated damage can sometimes be repaired, depending on how the radiator is built. This is the more affordable outcome, and it's a reasonable option when the rest of the radiator is otherwise in good shape.
Split Tanks, Cracked Necks, or Multiple Leaks: Usually Replacement
A cracked plastic end tank, a broken neck, or leaks showing up in more than one spot point to a radiator that's failing more broadly, not from one isolated bit of damage. Repairs in these cases tend not to hold, which makes replacement the more sensible choice even though it costs more upfront.
Internal Corrosion: A Clear Signal for Replacement
This is the one that's easy to miss, since it doesn't always show up as an external leak. Rusty, muddy, or sludge-like coolant, or coolant with visible debris floating in it, points to corrosion happening inside the radiator itself. Internal corrosion tends to keep getting worse and can spread contamination through the rest of the cooling system, which is why it usually pushes the decision toward replacement rather than a repair.
Why Age Matters Almost as Much as Symptoms
Most radiators last somewhere around 8 to 10 years, or roughly 50,000 to 100,000 miles, though this varies with maintenance history and driving conditions. A radiator well past that range is more prone to further leaks even after a repair, simply from age and repeated heat cycling. At that point, replacement is often the more practical choice even if the current leak itself could technically be patched.
What External Surface Rust Doesn't Tell You
Light rust on the outside of a radiator, especially on an older vehicle that's seen a few winters, isn't automatically a sign of failure. It only becomes a real concern once it starts affecting the core itself or accompanies other symptoms like overheating or coolant loss. The coolant's own condition is a much more reliable signal than the radiator's exterior appearance.
