Why Mercury Maintenance Matters More in Auburn

The youngest Mercury on the road is now well over a decade old, and years of Central New York road salt take a real toll on brake lines, exhaust systems, and power window or lock mechanisms on a car of that age. It's worth having these checked more carefully than you would on a newer vehicle.

The advantage is that every Mercury shares its platform, engine, and transmission with a Ford counterpart, the Grand Marquis with the Crown Victoria, the Sable with the Taurus, the Mountaineer with the Explorer, so parts and know-how are usually easier to find than the discontinued badge might suggest.

Mercury Repair in Auburn, NY: What You Need to Know

Ford retired the Mercury brand in 2011 after declining sales, but plenty of Grand Marquis, Sable, and Mountaineer models are still on the road, valued for the same comfort and reliability that made them popular in the first place.

At Sholar Automotive, we service Mercury's full model history. Our technicians have deep experience with Ford platforms, which covers essentially everything a Mercury needs, since these cars used Ford engines, transmissions, and chassis with Mercury-specific styling and trim.

Common Grand Marquis Engine Issues

On higher-mileage Panther-platform cars like the Grand Marquis, a cracked plastic intake manifold, worn spark plugs, or a failing ignition coil are common causes of rough idle or misfires. We test each component directly to find the actual source.

Parts for a Discontinued Brand

Because every Mercury was built on a shared Ford platform with Ford powertrains, most parts are identical to the equivalent Ford model and remain widely available, both new and used.

Why Sholar Automotive for Your Mercury

Mercury owners across Auburn and Cayuga County bring their cars to Sholar Automotive because there's no factory dealer network left, and because we treat these cars with the same honesty and care as anything else that comes through our doors. Your brakes, suspension, and other components are also checked as part of your annual NY State inspection, discontinued brand or not.

If you're due for service, hearing something new, or looking for a shop that will actually take care of your Mercury, give us a call at (315) 252-7223 or schedule online.

Mercury Repair FAQs

Is it still worth maintaining my Mercury now that the brand is discontinued?

Yes, if the car is in decent shape. Every Mercury model was closely related to a Ford counterpart, the Grand Marquis to the Crown Victoria, the Sable to the Taurus, the Mountaineer to the Explorer, which means parts and mechanical knowledge are usually easy to come by.

Can you still get parts for my Mercury?

Almost always, yes. Since Mercury models were built on shared Ford platforms and used Ford engines and transmissions, most parts are the same as the equivalent Ford model and remain widely available.

Why does my Grand Marquis have a rough idle or misfire?

On higher-mileage Grand Marquis and Panther-platform models, a cracked plastic intake manifold, worn spark plugs, or a failing ignition coil are common causes. We test each to find the actual source rather than guessing.

Will my Mercury still pass a NY State inspection?

A discontinued brand doesn't change the inspection requirements. Brakes, tires, lights, steering and suspension, and emissions where applicable are all checked the same way as any other vehicle. We can tell you honestly what your Mercury needs to pass.

Why bring my Mercury to an independent shop instead of a dealer?

There isn't a Mercury dealer network anymore, the brand closed in 2011. An independent shop with ASE certified technicians and real Ford platform experience is the practical place for ongoing Mercury care.
