Cold temperatures make the rubber components in an AIRMATIC air suspension more brittle, and a car that already sags a little after sitting overnight tends to show it more on a cold Auburn morning than it would in a mild climate. Small leaks that might go unnoticed for a while in warmer weather often announce themselves more clearly here.
Road salt is just as hard on a Mercedes-Benz's brake lines and suspension hardware as it is on any other vehicle in this area, so if you're driving yours through the winter, the basics matter just as much as the AIRMATIC-specific attention.

What Our Customers Say
Kate and Steve are a wonderful addition to the Auburn community. Their explanation of the service required was very accurate and there were no surprises from the quote to the final bill. Since my first visit, I've been back twice for other needs, and the level of service is consistently high.
Recommended by a dealership friend, and so glad he sent me here. Service was impeccable and prices were very reasonable for what I needed done. They will be my first choice for repairs going forward.
Amazing repair shop. Honest, friendly and very professional. I highly recommend Sholar Automotive for all your car repairs.
Mercedes-Benz Repair in Auburn, NY: What You Need to Know
Mercedes-Benz builds a genuinely comfortable ride, and much of that comes down to the AIRMATIC air suspension system found on many E, S, GLE, GLS, and older ML and GL models. That comfort comes with real maintenance considerations as the system ages.
At Sholar Automotive, we service Mercedes-Benz's sedan and SUV lineup. Our technicians understand AIRMATIC diagnosis and repair, 4MATIC AWD service, and the engine maintenance that keeps these vehicles running well long-term.
AIRMATIC Air Suspension Issues
AIRMATIC air suspension is known for leaks in the air springs, air lines, and fittings as the rubber components age and crack. A leak causes the vehicle to sag, and forces the air compressor to run more often trying to compensate, which is often what eventually burns the compressor out too. A sagging corner, a hissing sound, or a suspension warning light are all worth having diagnosed before it becomes a bigger repair.
4MATIC AWD Service
4MATIC models rely on their own differential and transfer case fluid, separate from the transmission. Keeping that fluid fresh on schedule protects the drivetrain and keeps the system performing the way it should, especially through winter driving.

Why is my Mercedes sagging on one side or overnight?
This is the classic sign of an AIRMATIC air suspension leak, usually from a cracked or brittle air spring, a leaking air line, or fitting. It's especially common on higher-mileage E, S, CLS, GL, GLE, and ML models. The compressor working overtime to compensate for a leak is often what eventually burns it out.
What does an "air suspension failure" or "vehicle too low" warning mean?
It means the AIRMATIC system can't maintain the correct ride height, usually due to a leak or a failing compressor. It's worth having it looked at promptly, since continuing to drive on a failing air suspension can affect handling and stability.
Does my Mercedes's 4MATIC AWD system need special maintenance?
Yes. 4MATIC models use their own transfer case and differential fluid, separate from the transmission, and that fluid should be checked and changed on its own schedule to keep the system running properly.
Why does my Mercedes have an oil leak?
Valve cover gaskets and oil pan seals are common sources of oil seepage on Mercedes engines as they age, similar to other German makes. Left unaddressed, a minor seep can progress to a larger leak, so it's worth having checked during routine service.
Is Sholar Automotive less expensive than the Mercedes-Benz dealership?
As an independent shop, our labor rates are typically lower than dealership pricing, and we're upfront about cost before any work begins. We use OEM or OEM-equivalent parts.
Serving Auburn and Surrounding Communities
Sholar Automotive proudly serves drivers from Auburn, Weedsport, Sennett, Owasco, Fleming, Union Springs, Moravia, Port Byron, Skaneateles, and throughout Cayuga County.
