A Porsche that's stored or driven less through Auburn winters still needs consistent attention. Long periods of sitting can be hard on seals, batteries, and tires that develop flat spots, and infrequent short trips don't let the engine and PDK transmission reach full operating temperature the way regular driving does.
Road salt is just as hard on a Porsche's brake lines and suspension hardware as it is on any other vehicle here, so if you're driving yours through the winter rather than storing it, the basics matter just as much as the Porsche-specific attention.

Customer Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Last year, Jason's crew removed the front struts on our BMW Z4. His prices were outstanding, and we plan to have them work on our other vehicles if and when needed for repairs. We recommend them 100 percent.
Recommended by a dealership friend, and so glad he sent me here. Service was impeccable and prices were very reasonable for what I needed done. They will be my first choice for repairs going forward.
I was listened to with respect for what I thought my vehicle's problems were, and it was addressed in a speedy fashion. Steve and the staff are extraordinarily friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They will always have my business.
Porsche Repair in Auburn, NY: What You Need to Know
Porsche has a well-earned reputation for engineering that rewards genuine understanding of its systems, and that's especially true on older water-cooled models with known IMS bearing exposure. From the 911 and Boxster to the Cayenne and Macan, correct maintenance protects both the driving experience and long-term value.
At Sholar Automotive, we service Porsche's sports car and SUV lineups alike. Our technicians understand IMS bearing risk on affected model years, PDK transmission service, and the maintenance both track-driven and daily-driven Porsches need.
The IMS Bearing Issue
The intermediate shaft bearing in 1997-2005 Boxster and 911 (996) engines, and some later 997/987 models, is a known wear item that can fail and cause catastrophic engine damage. The single-row bearing used from roughly 2000 to 2005 had the highest failure rate, documented in a class-action settlement against Porsche. If you own an affected model, replacing the bearing proactively as scheduled maintenance is far cheaper than dealing with a failure after the fact.
PDK Transmission Service
Porsche's PDK dual-clutch transmission needs its fluid changed on a regular schedule to keep shifts crisp and protect the clutch packs. Neglecting this service can lead to rough or delayed shifting over time.

Porsche owners across Auburn and Cayuga County choose Sholar Automotive for technically sound service at rates below dealership pricing. Your brakes, suspension, and other Porsche components are also checked as part of your annual NY State inspection, so keeping up with service keeps your sticker valid too.

What is the Porsche IMS bearing issue?
The intermediate shaft, or IMS, bearing is a wear item in 1997-2005 Boxster and 911 (996) engines that can fail and cause catastrophic engine damage. It's most associated with the single-row bearing used from about 2000 to 2005. Replacing it proactively, before it fails, is far cheaper than an engine rebuild after the fact.
Does my Porsche still have the IMS bearing risk?
It depends on your model and year. The risk is specific to certain 911, Boxster, and Cayman engines built between 1997 and 2008. Later engine designs are not affected the same way. We can tell you whether your specific Porsche has this exposure.
Does my Porsche's PDK transmission need fluid service?
Yes. PDK dual-clutch transmissions need fluid changed on a regular schedule to keep shifting crisp and to protect the clutch packs. Skipping it can lead to rough or delayed shifts over time.
Do you service Porsche Cayenne and Macan SUVs?
Yes. We service the full Porsche lineup, including the Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera, not just the sports car models.
Is Sholar Automotive less expensive than the Porsche dealership?
As an independent shop, our labor rates are typically lower than dealership pricing, and we're upfront about cost before any work begins. We use OEM or OEM-equivalent parts.
Serving Auburn and Surrounding Communities
Sholar Automotive proudly serves drivers from Auburn, Weedsport, Sennett, Owasco, Fleming, Union Springs, Moravia, Port Byron, Skaneateles, and throughout Cayuga County.
