Oil Changes & Routine Maintenance

Quick, Honest Oil Changes in Auburn, NY

An oil change is easy to put off, but it's the simplest thing you can do to keep your engine running well for years. Our ASE certified mechanics change your oil and filter, then look over the rest of the car while it's already up on the lift. Same-day appointments, all makes and models.

Still Putting Off That Oil Change?

You're busy, and an oil change feels like something that can wait a few more weeks. Most of the time it can. But old, dirty oil stops protecting your engine the way it should, and small problems that would have been cheap to catch early can turn into expensive ones. If it's been a while since your last change, or you're just not sure, it's a quick, low-stress fix.

You don't need a dramatic warning sign to get this done. A dashboard oil light, a burnt oil smell, or simply not remembering your last oil change are all good enough reasons to call.

What We Do During an Oil Change

An oil change at Sholar Automotive is never just draining and refilling. Since your car is already in the bay, we take the time to look it over.

  • Fresh oil and a new filter, conventional, blend, or full synthetic
  • Check of coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid
  • Tire pressure check and a look at tread wear
  • Visual check of brakes, belts, and hoses for early wear
  • A look underneath for any new leaks

If we find something that needs attention, we'll tell you plainly what it is, what it costs, and whether it can wait. No pressure, no surprise charges.

How Often You Really Need One

The old "every 3,000 miles" rule came from conventional oil, and it still holds up for that oil, most conventional oil is good for 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Full synthetic oil is built to last longer, often 7,500 to 10,000 miles depending on your vehicle. Your owner's manual has the exact interval your manufacturer recommends, and we're glad to check it for you if you're not sure.

Central New York winters and short trips around town both work oil harder than a long highway drive would. Cold starts and stop-and-go driving through downtown Auburn don't give your engine time to reach full operating temperature, which lets moisture build up in the oil faster. If most of your driving is short trips, it's worth staying on the closer end of your interval rather than the far end.

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Oil is what keeps every moving part of your engine from grinding against every other moving part. Once it breaks down, it stops doing that job well, and the engine starts wearing faster than it should. Staying on top of oil changes is one of the cheapest ways to avoid a much bigger repair bill down the road.

Because we check the rest of the car during every oil change, it's also a good way to catch small issues, like a worn belt or a slow leak, before they turn into a problem that leaves you stranded. Oil changes are just one part of what we handle, take a look at our full auto repair services for everything else we cover.

Oil Change FAQs

How often do I really need an oil change?

It depends on the oil you use and how you drive. Conventional oil is usually good for 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Full synthetic oil can often go 7,500 to 10,000 miles, sometimes more. Your owner's manual has the exact number for your vehicle, and we're happy to check it with you.

What's the difference between conventional and synthetic oil?

Conventional oil costs less but breaks down faster and needs to be changed more often. Synthetic oil is made to handle heat and stress better, so it lasts longer between changes and protects the engine a bit more. We'll help you pick the right one for your vehicle and how you drive.

What's included in an oil change at Sholar Automotive?

Every oil change includes a new filter and a check of your other fluids, tire pressure, brakes, belts, and hoses. We're looking the car over while it's already in the bay, not just draining and refilling the oil.

How long does an oil change take?

Most oil changes are done in well under an hour. We can often get you in the same day you call.

What if my oil light comes on between appointments?

Give us a call. An oil light can mean it's just time for a change, or it can point to a leak or a bigger problem. It's worth having us take a quick look either way.
