It can mean almost anything, from a loose gas cap to a serious engine problem. The only way to know for sure is to pull the actual codes and check them against what the engine is doing. We never guess based on the light alone.

Is it safe to keep driving with the check engine light on?

A steady light usually means it's fine to drive carefully and get it checked soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, and you should stop driving and have it looked at right away.

Why is my engine idling rough or stalling?

Rough idle and stalling often point to a vacuum leak, worn spark plugs, a dirty throttle body, or a fouled fuel injector. We check each of these during a diagnosis rather than replacing parts one at a time and hoping.

How much does an engine diagnostic cost?

It depends on how much testing is needed to actually confirm the cause, some problems are quick to isolate and others take more time. We'll always tell you the diagnostic fee before we start, and it goes toward the repair if you have us do the work.

Will a check engine light cause me to fail my NY State inspection?

Yes. New York State inspections include an emissions check on the OBD-II system, and a check engine light or unresolved emissions code will fail the vehicle. Getting the light diagnosed and fixed is necessary to pass.
