Why Your Car's Heat Isn't Working
A car heater relies on hot engine coolant passing through a small radiator-like unit called the heater core, with a fan pushing air across it into the cabin. When something in that chain breaks down, cold air is the result, whether that means no heat at all or air that just won't get properly warm. Here's what we check, in the order that usually makes sense.
The Two-Hose Test
One of the fastest ways to narrow down a no-heat complaint is to feel the two heater hoses where they pass through the firewall, once the engine has fully warmed up. Both should be hot. If they're both cool, the problem is upstream, likely low coolant, a thermostat stuck open, or air trapped in the system. If one hose is hot and the other is noticeably cooler, coolant isn't making it through the heater core properly, which usually points to a clog.
Low Coolant or Trapped Air
If coolant is low, there isn't enough hot fluid to circulate through the heater core. Air pockets cause a similar problem and are especially common right after a coolant flush, top-off, or any repair that involved opening the cooling system. Trapped air can block coolant flow to the heater core specifically, even when the rest of the engine is running at a normal temperature. Properly bleeding the system usually resolves this.
Thermostat Stuck Open
The thermostat controls how much coolant flows to the radiator to regulate engine temperature. If it's stuck open, the engine never reaches its normal operating temperature, so the coolant reaching your heater core never gets hot enough to warm the cabin air, even though everything is circulating normally.
Clogged Heater Core
Over time, rust, sediment, and old coolant debris can build up inside the heater core's narrow passages and restrict flow. This is one of the more common causes of a heater that blows warm at best, never fully hot. A careful flush sometimes clears it, though a heavily clogged core may need to be replaced.
Blend Door Actuator Failure
The blend door actuator is a small electric motor that controls a flap inside your dash, directing air either through the heater core or around it. When it fails, it often gets stuck in the cold position, so the blower fan works fine and the heater core itself might even be hot, but the air reaching the vents never gets the chance to warm up. A clicking noise from behind the dash when you adjust the temperature is a common sign of a struggling actuator.
Heater Control Valve
Some older vehicles use a heater control valve that opens to let hot coolant into the heater core only when you call for heat. If this valve sticks closed, hot coolant never reaches the core at all, even though the rest of the cooling system is working normally.
A Sweet Smell or a Windshield That Won't Clear
Since the heater core sits behind your dash, a leak there can let coolant seep into the cabin instead of just onto the ground. A sweet smell inside the car, a foggy windshield that won't clear, or coolant that keeps disappearing with no puddle underneath the car are all signs worth having checked promptly.

Why is there no heat in my car at all?
The most common causes are low coolant, air trapped in the cooling system, a thermostat stuck open, or a blend door actuator stuck in the cold position. A quick way to narrow it down is to feel both heater hoses at the firewall once the engine is warm. If both are cool, the problem is upstream in the cooling system. If one is hot and one is cold, the heater core itself is likely blocked.

This is a common and usually simple problem. Air can get trapped in the cooling system after fresh coolant is added, and that air pocket can block hot coolant from reaching the heater core. Bleeding the system properly usually restores heat. In some cases a flush can also loosen old sediment that settles into an already-narrow heater core, which needs a separate fix.
How can I tell if my heater core is clogged?
With the engine warmed up, carefully feel both heater hoses where they enter the firewall. They should both be hot. If one is noticeably hotter than the other, coolant isn't flowing through the core properly, which points to a clog or restriction.
Is a sweet smell inside my car related to my heater?
It can be. A sweet smell, a foggy windshield that won't clear, or coolant loss with no visible external leak can point to a leaking heater core, since it sits behind the dash and can leak coolant into the cabin. This is worth having checked promptly rather than waiting.
