Signs Your Tires or Alignment Need Attention
Some of these are about the tires themselves, and some point to the alignment. Either way, they're worth a look before they turn into a bigger repair, or a blowout.
Uneven Tire Wear
Wear concentrated on one edge of the tire usually points to an alignment that's out of spec, though it can also come from a worn suspension component.
Car Pulling to One Side
If your car drifts left or right on a flat road, it's often an alignment issue, though uneven tire pressure or a suspension problem can cause the same feeling.
Steering Wheel Off-Center
If the steering wheel isn't straight when you're driving straight, that's one of the clearest signs your alignment needs to be checked.
Vibration at Speed
A vibration that shows up around certain speeds can point to a tire that's out of balance, or in some cases a suspension issue worth a closer look.
Low Tread or Cracked Sidewalls
Worn tread or cracks in the sidewall reduce your grip and your safety margin, especially in wet or winter conditions.
Frequent Low Tire Pressure
A tire that keeps losing pressure often has a slow leak or a damaged valve stem, and it's worth finding before it goes flat on you.

Why Alignments Don't Stay Put in Auburn
Frost heaves and potholes are just part of driving here after a Central New York winter, and a hard hit into one is often all it takes to knock an alignment out, even if the car still feels mostly normal at first. Left unchecked, an alignment that's off wears tires unevenly, sometimes fast enough that you'll need new tires well before you should.
It's worth having your alignment checked any time you hit something hard, or if you notice your tires wearing differently on one side than the other.

How Tire & Alignment Service Is Handled at Sholar Automotive
Tires are the one thing between your car and the road, so we don't treat them as an afterthought. Every tire visit includes a check of tread depth, pressure, and overall condition, and if we see wear that looks like an alignment issue, we'll say so plainly rather than just selling you a new set of tires that will wear the same way.
Because tire condition affects how well your car stops, tire and alignment issues sometimes show up alongside a brake concern or a steering and suspension issue, and we'll check across all three rather than looking at tires in isolation. It's also worth knowing that tire tread and condition are checked during your annual NY State inspection. Tire service is just one part of what we handle, take a look at our full auto repair services for everything else we cover.

How do I know if I need an alignment?
The most common signs are a car that pulls to one side on a flat road, a steering wheel that isn't centered when driving straight, or tires wearing unevenly. Hitting a pothole or curb hard can also knock an alignment out even if nothing else feels different yet.
Why is my tire wearing unevenly on one edge?
Wear concentrated on the inside or outside edge of a tire is a classic sign of an alignment that's out of spec. It can also point to a worn suspension component. We check both when we look at uneven wear rather than assuming it's just the alignment.
How often should tires be rotated?
Most vehicles do well with a rotation every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, often lining up with an oil change. Regular rotation helps tires wear evenly and last longer.
Will worn tires cause me to fail my NY State inspection?
Yes. New York State inspections require at least 2/32 of an inch of tread, and tires can't have bulges, deep cuts, or exposed cords. Worn or damaged tires are one of the most common reasons a vehicle fails.
Can a flat tire be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?
It depends on where the damage is. A puncture in the tread is often repairable, while damage to the sidewall usually isn't safe to patch and means the tire needs to be replaced. We'll take a look and tell you honestly which one you're dealing with.
