It seems like it should be the other way around: more miles should mean more wear. But when it comes to oil condition specifically, sustained highway driving is actually gentler per mile than the short, stop-and-go trips a lot of people assume are easier on their car.
The Real Mechanism
Oil needs to reach roughly 212 degrees Fahrenheit and stay there for a while to fully boil off the moisture and combustion byproducts that naturally accumulate inside an engine. Sustained highway speed gets oil to that temperature and keeps it there for extended periods. Short, stop-and-go city trips often never get the oil hot enough for long enough to accomplish this, leaving moisture and contaminants behind that would otherwise have burned off.
Why This Feels Counterintuitive
It's natural to assume more miles driven means more wear, and in terms of raw component wear over the vehicle's life, that's generally still true. But specifically in terms of oil condition per mile, a mile of sustained highway driving is doing less damage to the oil itself than a mile of short, cold-engine city driving, since the highway mile actually lets the oil do its job of self-cleaning through heat.
What This Actually Means for Your Interval
This isn't a reason to stretch beyond your manufacturer's recommended interval if you're doing more highway driving. What it does mean is the reverse: if most of your regular driving is short trips rather than highway miles, you may actually fall into what's called severe service territory, and a shorter interval than the standard recommendation might make more sense for your specific driving pattern.
