The Actual Numbers Behind It
A car battery can lose roughly 20 percent of its effective capacity at freezing temperatures, and as much as 50 percent in truly severe cold, well below zero. That's a significant reduction in available electrical power, and headlights, which draw continuously and don't have much tolerance for a weak supply, are one of the more noticeable places this shows up.
Why It's Worse at Idle or Low Speed
Your alternator's output varies with engine speed, producing less at idle than it does once you're driving at higher RPM.
